Velcro and fannypacks

This evening at the gym in Fairfield, I spotted an man wearing not only a black, leather fannypack...facing forward during his workout...but ALSO white, leather, velcro shoes. Can someone please explain these attire choices to me? I didn't even know they made velcro shoes in big-person sizes! I ran into this fine piece of work in the abs/stretching area where he was enthusiastically doing lunges and writing in a small notebook. Based on these observations, I am inclined to believe that his fashion decisions were not based on apathy or ignorance, but instead, his black and white leather combo was somehow supposed to ENHANCE his dilligently recorded workout. I cannot begin to guess...
